I love taking time out to hike solo. I love to hike at my own pace, stopping when I want to enjoy the views or catch my breathe. I love spending time in the quiet, it allows me time to think and reflect. My most exciting (and sometimes crazy!) plans often come from my Solo hikes!

While it is awesome to Hike solo it can have its challenges and you should use precaution when going out by yourself, even if it is just a short walk.

Check out the tips below to enjoy hiking solo safely!

  • Make sure you tell someone (or more than one person!) where you are going. I generally put it in our family messenger chat so that the details are there if my family need to look back on to remember where I am.
  • Take a first Aid kit, including snake bite kit, even for short walks.
  • Take a whistle -I have one attached to my daypack ready to be used if I need to get attention for any reason.
  • Take plenty of food and water – plus some emergency snacks.
  • Carry a hiking pole or large stick. These are handy for warding off any unwanted things on the track.
  • Carry a fully charged phone and backup portable chargers and cord. Consider getting a PLB ( personal location beacon).
  • Download the Emergency plus app – this app is handy for everyday activities as well.
  • Take and wear appropriate clothing for the weather plus take an all weather jacket.
  • Refrain from listening to music through earphones or only have one piece in so you can be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Don’t take a Solo hike that is too challenging or dangerous unless you are an expert hiker.
  • STAY ON THE TRAIL!

So there it is… practical tips to go Hiking Solo!

So go out and enjoy the peace and quiet on a Solo Hike… I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
