Illawarra Fly TreeTop Walk 6

Recently we were so excited to be invited to the amazing Illawarra Fly Treetop walk on the South Coast of Australia. It was an experience we will remember for a long time.

Entry and drinks were gifted to us, but all opinions are my own.

Upon entering the park we were greeted with the lush rainforest surroundings, filled with the soothing bird noises. It was so nice to wander on along, chatting about what we were going to experience and checking the map as we went. Our first little stop along the way was a sweet little “Fairy Village” filled with some cute little buildings all with intricate details that the kids were entranced by.

Not far from the “Fairy Village” was our first stop along the Gruffalo Spotters trail, a new exciting interactive activity for the kids (and some adults!). The experience requires a downloaded app which allows you to find all 5 characters from the Gruffalo book and then “bring them to life” using an augmented reality! We all really enjoyed getting or photos taken with the characters, it was so much fun to pretend they were right there in the rainforest with us.

After enjoying more of a rainforest walk we soon found ourselves stepping on the treetop walkway, a 500metre walk on a steel structure that is nestled 20 – 30 meters above the ground! oh and you can see down through the structure to the forest floor below! There wasn’t a need to worry though because the structure can withstand winds of up to 280km per hour although in parts it did bounce a bit! ( especially at the end of Cantilever one!) Lucky we were too busy noticing the gorgeous surroundings and views to be worried. If you want to see how much it moved check out our YouTube video by clicking here.

I must admit though when the knights tower lookout came into view my heart did race a little. The tower rises 45metres above the forest floor and gives you a birds eye view over the lush green farmlands and right to the coastline of the Illawarra. Taking the first steps were the hardest but as we continued upwards we became more confident and when we reached the summit we were rewarded with an amazing clear day. My son noticed that the fixed binoculars were free so we used them to pinpoint various landmarks including Wollongong, Mt Keira and Jambaroo action Park. It was definitely worth the slightly nerve wracking ascent!

After stepping off the walkway we wandered back up towards the visitor centre via a little bush walk. My daughter loves a good souvenir (especially if it is a plush!) and she had birthday money burning a hole in her pocket, so while she looked through the souvenir store I grabbed myself a delicious Chai Latte from the onsite coffee shop.

I would highly recommend a visit if you are on the South Coast of NSW, The Illawarra Fly TreeTop walk is a great experience for the whole family.
