Best Hiking Socks

My greatest dilemma when preparing for my Kokoda trek was what socks to wear!! It kept me up at night, because I had heard horror stories of socks rubbing and forming blisters and feet getting wet because the socks held moisture… I didn’t want my choice of socks to ruin my trek!!

I did my research online, but nobody would actually say which ones would work for me, so I thought I would hedge my bets and take three different pairs of socks so that if one type didn’t work for me surely one of the others would!

Here is the three pairs I decided on;

( this post is NOT sponsored and all opinions are my own)

Kathmandu Ergonomic Hike Socks;

These socks are specially designed to fit your feet with cushioning where you need it, including on top of your foot and back of shin. Each sock is nominated for either your left or right foot making them fit snugly. They are made with ” Nuyarn” a product that apparently makes the yarn more stretchy, durable and warm. The socks contain 50% Merino Wool, 35% Nylon and 15% Elastane (Lycra). They come in sizes s/m , m/l and l/xl. and retail at $49.98 with discounts for members …(but as with anything Kathmandu – wait for the specials!) See here for more info. as a side note the “fluff’ you see in the pic is remnants of hikers wool.

Macpac Merino Hike Sock.

These Macpac socks are described as a technical crew height, hiking sock. They have all over cushioning and a smooth toe seam, as well as an elasticated arch to prevent movement. The socks contain 82% Merino Wool, 12% Nylon and 6% Elastine and come is sizes S, M, L. Retail Price is $34.95 but they offer discounts for members. See here for more details.

Wigwam Merino Comfort Sock.

These socks are made in the U.S and with the brand being around for a very long time they have fine tuned the design .. they have all round cushioning and seamless toe closure. They come in Sizes Small through to Extra Extra Large as well as kids sizes! Retail Price is $27.95 (from Paddy Pallin) and discounts for members. See here for more details.

So which ones where the best hiking socks???

While all the socks met my requirements…. they kept my feet dry and cool even in the humid conditions (thanks Merino Wool). I didn’t get any blisters and they all mostly stayed in place… the best hiking sock was the Kathmandu ones. They fit extremely well on my small feet which could have been because the socks are designed with assigned feet. They were also longer then the other socks, so were awesome with my Kathmandu hiking boots and under my gaiters… they also never slipped down. They dried well overnight ready to use the next day if needed and the cushioning was in all the right places. Another trekker had the same pair of socks and he had no trouble with them either, so I guess they are great for most people. While the price is the Hiking Socks is the most expensive of all of them, I highly recommend waiting till they come on sale… I got mine for half price. And one last tip…. try on whatever socks you decide on in store and make sure you use them on your training hikes before you tackle your big trek!

So that’s about it really….

Do you have a recommendation for the best hiking sock??
