Team Lab Borderless, Tokyo, Japan. 4

There was one place that my eldest daughter had on top of her list for our visit to Tokyo…

No it wasn’t Harijuku, where she got the biggest fairy floss ever, neither was it Disney Sea where she screamed her lungs out on the Tower of Terror, and it definitely wasn’t walking across the famous Shibuya crossing… although she thought that was awesome once she had dodge all the people!

No, the one thing that my daughter didn’t want to miss during our short time in Tokyo was an amazing interactive digital art exhibition called TeamLab Borderless.

According to their website… TeamLab Borderless is ” Art without boundaries, moves out of the room, communicates with other works, is affected, does not have a boundary with other works, and sometimes mixes”.

Now first up, I wouldn’t say, the location isn’t very central to Tokyo, (it is located in Odaiba’s Palette Town development, next to the Ferris wheel) and for us it took three trains and about 1 hour to get there, so take that into consideration when planning your day. The second point is that you are advised to buy your tickets before you go, the exhibition is VERY popular and books out. You can book online here, or if you are confident you can buy tickets at Lawson’s convenience stores through the ticket purchase booths. When you buy online you will get sent a confirmation email…. this is not your ticket! The morning of the day you are booked in, you can access the ticket, and either print if off or use electronically. I was a bit concerned…. we didn’t have access to a printer nor did we have global roaming data… we just use WiFi when available. All good though, TeamLab does have WiFi, a little bit patchy, but good enough that when we got inside, we could load up the tickets and get in!!

It was overwhelming but amazing at the same time. There is no signage, the idea is that you wander around, finding hidden nooks and discovering new exhibits as you go, and with the space spanning 10,000 sqm, divided into 5 sections with over 50 exhibits… there is plenty to explore! I had this great fear that we were going to miss out on something… just ask the staff if you are looking for a particular exhibition and they will point you in the right direction!

With so many areas that are absolutely amazing, Its hard to pick a favourite space.

In saying that, we each did have a highlight!

Mine was the waterfall room, I loved to spend time just watching the lights flow like water down the walls and across the ground, and when you stood against the wall it felt (sorry looked!) like it was running over you.

Both the younger kids love the Athletics Forest… a huge space that contains so many exhibits that you can fully interact with…the planet jumping pillow, flower slide, the weightless forest, areas to climb… but the space they enjoyed the most was where they could colour in / or design their own sea creature and the staff scanned the drawing, then it was projected onto the wall and floor!

And my eldest daughter loved… well she honestly couldn’t pick just one thing … she loved it all!!
