The Hydro Majestic. 8

The Hydro Majestic

Many times while travelling up the Blue Mountains, I had passed The Hydro Majestic.

The white exterior of the expansive building caught my eye, if just for a second, every time.

A few times we had stopped, gazing in wonderment from the outside, too scared to enter through the doors.

The other weekend though, I didn’t have to wonder anymore, my time had finally come to discover the beauty and history of The Hydro Majestic in The Blue Mountains.

Check out our YouTube Video of our stay.

Nearly every year my Sister, Mother and I take the opportunity to go away to together. To catch up, reconnect and relax, away from our families. This year we chose to stay two nights at the magnificent Hydro Majestic soaking up the history of this iconic building.

Built along the escarpment edge, the Hydro Majestic spans 1.1km and offers glorious views spanning over the Mandalong Valley. That in itself was enough for me, but to top it off the art deco design throughout the hotel and rooms was breathtaking and really made you feel like you had stepped back in time.

We stayed in connecting Belgravia Valley View rooms, one room with two king single beds and the other with a king bed. Opening up the light blocking curtains (absolutely essential for catching up on some sleep on these holidays!) to view the Mandalong Valley blanketed in fog was stunning. In fact one morning the complete valley was covered for most of the day, giving it a special, magical feel.

The lobby is also is art deco inspired, with large, plush lounges, an inviting fire place and uninterrupted views over the valley. It is not only where we enjoyed a delicious and bountiful breakfast each morning, but also a great spot to sit and enjoy and coffee and read a book in peace.

Late afternoon meant cocktails and an early dinner, and the best place to grab both was at the Salon Du. With the Chinese inspired decor and menu, it was a cosy place to relax and unwind after our long day. We had just arrived at the Salon Du, when we noticed the sun quickly setting over the surrounding mountains. We quickly donned our coats and stepped out onto the veranda, just in time to catch the last of the days rays, as they filled the sky with their glorious colours.

While the decor of the Hydro Majestic is breathtaking throughout, the centerpiece of the whole hotel is unquestionably is the Wintergarden. While you can enjoy a exquisite lunch or dinner in the Wintergarden, we chose to savour their exceptional afternoon high tea. Served on a three tier silver service, we enjoyed brewed tea, freshly baked scones, petite pastries and gourmet finger sandwiches, while soaking up endless views down the valley. We spent two and a half hours here, we loved the design of the room, the plush furnishings and cherry blossom trees gave us the impression of being in the garden, hence the name!

While you might think that the Hydro Majestic is about amazing food and stunning decor, it also has so much history surrounding it. I was definitely interested in hearing its story, so we took a tour. The concierge was very knowledgeable and shared with us the history of the building which dates back to 1904 when it was first opened as Australia’s first health retreat by the retail baron, Mark Foy. Running for about 45mins, we enjoyed every minute of this insight into this luxurious site.

You know, this is one place I’ve always wanted to stay – right from when I lived in Springwood as a teenager. The stories about the place – the scandals & the glamour – fascinated me.

OMG, I can’t believe you stayed here, I’ve never seen inside the rooms before! It’s so gorgeous! I love the Hydro-Majestic. I had my 30th birthday there, we had this great High Tea and a lovely long chat on a Sunday afternoon.

Although I have entered the Hydro Majestic and had a wander around I have never stayed there! This sounds like the perfect getaway location from Sydney. I am so tempted to go there for a long weekend now after reading this.

I am like you and have driven past it many times. I am aware of some of its history. I certainly does stand out with its architecture. Sounds like it was the right spot for your catch up!
