Lots of people think they can’t save for travel, it’s out of their reach. But if I, as a single mum, can do it so can you!
Each month I will show you what small things I do to help us save money so that we have more for our travel fund.
This month I will be writing about making bees wax wraps.
If you want to save money, and the environment at the same time one way to start is to cut out using one use plastic.. cling wrap for example.
Some time a go I was gifted some bees wax wraps. They are pretty awesome to cover left overs and wrap my sandwiches and I defintley wanted more… but the price of them I just couldn’t justify! I looked online, of course, to see how to make them, but it all seemed a little complicated. So when my sister organised for me to attend a bees wax workshop I was really quiet excited! Thanks Sis!
It is really easy. Here are the steps:
Step 1:
Cut out your fabric. Its best to use cotton, reusing fabric like sheets, or quilt covers. would be perfect! We made three different sizes. 21cm, 26cm, 33cm squared. you can cut them straight or use pinking shears or even cut in a circle its up to you!
Step 2:
Apply melted bee wax with a brush across the fabric (on one side). Get bees wax from anyone who sells honey (like at the farmers markets) or on Ebay and melt it down. At the workshop it was melted in a slow cooker, but you could melt it in the microwave or on slowly on the stove top. Either way make sure you only use something that you aren’t going to use ever again for food! Place the fabric onto a piece of baking paper and brush the wax across the fabric, but not too thickly.
Step 3:
Ironing the fabric and bees wax.. Place the fabric with the baking power over the bees wax side of the fabric and iron with a hot iron in a sweeping action. Make sure it is sitting on top of another scrap piece of fabric because the wax will come off onto it. You can see the wax move along over the fabric and covering it, so move it around till it covers the whole piece of material.
Step 4:
Hang it up to dry! Let it dry and then check it out to see if it is all covered. also take this opportunity to maybe add another layer or cover parts where it hasn’t taken. If you add more make sure you do all the other steps again.
So there it is! How to make a Bees wax wrap the easy way! Thanks again Sis for taking me!
Hopefully you will give them a go an not only save money (for travel!!) but also help save the environment.
Safe Travels
Kerrie

Oh these are awesome! I’ve seen this type of thing advertised before but couldn’t justify spending that much money either. I never thought about making my own. Thanks for the idea
What a fantastc idea! Thanks for the tip.
Ah, but then I’d have to use an iron. And I’ve sworn to never use one ever, for any reason
Wow. I have learned something new here. What a good idea and I commend you for it. Thanks for sharing.
