Once a month I am going to ask the kids what there favourite experiences while travelling have been so far.
This month I asked Amber (21 years old).
What is one of the experiences you have loved so far? The luge was something we all could do together in Queenstown. Some of the other activities have age or height restrictions but this didn’t so it was something adventurous that even the younger kids could do.
Why should others do it?:Reasonably priced, fun, thrilling and an adventure for all the family!
Walking to the base of the Gondala we started to begin to get excited about riding the luge which races down a 1.6km track at the top of the mountian. After purchasing our family ride ticket which included our trip in the Gondala and 10 luge rides to share, we took the warm and comfortable journey up the mountain, taking In the views over Queenstown and the Remarkables from the windows.
An Icy wind with some snow flurries greeted us on our exit at the top of the mountain and I began to hope that we had layered up warm enough for the luge experience and that we wouldn’t freeze. Full of anticipation we each grabbed a helmet and joined the line for the chair lifts to take us further up the mountain to the beginning of the track.
After a safety outline and a test of our abilities to stop, we were left to our own devices to chose a track to zoom down, testing out the steering and braking systems as we careered around the corners. It was hard to concentrate on the track, as the views over the township of Queenstown were breathtaking even on a day where it was a little overcast.
The experience was exhilarating, but at the same time I had confidence in the kids and my safety. At some spots, we hit a little ice on the track, but the luge kept on course, safely carrying us down to the end, ready to board the chairlift to start all over again!
Overall all the kids loved this experience, it became one of most loved activities of the trip. Check out this You tube video for more!

Where we stayed:
Need to know: Dress warmly (especially in the cooler months), wear gloves – your hands will be cold holding onto the handles and beanies, helmets are compulsory, age and height restrictions apply (children under 5 or under 110cm need to ride tandem), you can walk up the track instead of riding the Gondala if you are energetic, there is a coffee shop and restaurant available for meals, it’s lots of fun!!!!!
Safe travels!
Kerrie.
P.S: Sorry I have no photos of us actually on the luge…. I have no idea where they have gone!
