Kids recommend: Skywalk at the Sydney Tower eye.

Each week I am going to ask the kids what there favourite experiences while travelling have been so far.

This week I have asked Laura (17 years old)

Why:
I enjoyed spending the weekend in Sydney and climbing the Skywalk on the Sydney Tower for my 16th birthday. Even though it was in Sydney it was good to explore different areas that I have never been before. It felt as though we were in a different country. I liked that Mum climbed the tower with me even though she is severely scared of heights. It was good to get her out of her comfort zone and enjoy the experience.

Why should others have a go?

The Sydney Tower is higher then the Sydney harbour bridge so if you have ever climbed or wanted to climb the Harbour Bridge then you should definitely do the Skywalk. It was an amazing adventure and I recommend it to everyone!

Walking to the Sydney Tower

1 Walking to the Sydney Tower

Walking along the city roads, the Sydney tower began to loom over us. My heart began to thump in my chest, knowing that in a short period of time we were going to walk around the outside of the Sydney eye tower, to celebrate Laura’s 16th birthday.

Trying to hide my fear, I put on a brave face, as we took the lift up the 268m to the observation deck. We were a little bit early, so we took the chance to walk around inside and look out over the city, while still behind the thick glass! I remember when I was younger being so scared being up here that I walked as far away from the glass as possible and this memory came flooding back to me at this moment and I began to wonder what the hell I had got myself into!!

The time came for us to gear up in our suits, our harnesses ( this is what would keep us secured to the rail) and put our bags and stuff in a locker. Laura and the other people in our group were excited and their enthusiasm began to start to rub off on me, but I still had a fear of not being able to move while the group just stood there waiting for me!

Soon this fear was put aside as the guide asked who might have some uneasy feelings and instructed me to go to the back of the pack, at least if I struggled I wouldn’t  stuff up anyone else’s experience! Laura was OK with this decision; she knew that this was going to be a challenge for me! After listening to further safety instructions we were ready to go.

I took a deep breath as I stepped out, and looked out to the horizon. Listening to the guide talk about the tower and the sights of the city that were in front of us took my mind of the height and after a while I began to enjoy the experience and i even looked down a bit!! We followed a path around the edge, all the while being safely secured onto the rail, and by the time we reached the glass floor, I was more confident but at the same time I still had an uneasy feeling in the base of my belly. This was also the spot for the guide to take some photos, and even though I didn’t have much faith in it I did manage to jump a little for the action shot!

Being brave as we jumped!

Coming to the end of the experience I was very proud that I didn’t have any melt downs and I knew that it was an unique experience that Laura would remember for ever!
