Kids recommend: Snowmobiling in Canada.

Each week I am going to ask the kids what there favourite experiences while travelling have been so far.

This week I asked Amber ( 21 years old).

What have you loved the best so far?

When we were in Canada we went snowmobiling . Even though I couldn’t drive I loved it because it was different and exciting, it was fun.

Why should other people do it?
Everyone should do it if they have a chance because it’s not something you do everyday its a once in a lifetime experience.

Meeting at the designated point we gathered, giddy with excitement and some trepidation, ready to ride on the snowmobiles that were lined up in front of us. The tour guides organised us with the heavy and cumbersome helmets, and gave us a basic run down on how to operate these beasts, that were to take us through the back trails of the mountains.

Cautiously I straddled the machine, running through my head which was the throttle and most importantly the break! Last time I sat on anything like this it was when I was a child, riding my cousins peewee motorbike, and admittedly, that ended with me entangled in a barb wire fence! This was not a story I had previously shared with Amber, my trustworthy passenger who had her arms wrapped around me, and not one I was about to divulge, just before we took off into the Canadian back country. My only saving grace, I figured, was the lack of fences in the area.

Finally we took off, forming a convoy as we followed a well formed path, stopping periodically to have a breather and have photo opportunities. To be honest, if it wasn’t for these photos I wouldn’t have much of a recollection of the experience, my knuckles were white with fear, my mind and body focused on surviving the ride while not losing my much loved passenger off the back, while all the time having flash backs to my childhood. I do remember during the times we stopped, enjoying the peacefulness surrounding us, it was so quiet that you could hear the ice dripping off the trees and the squirrels scurrying away to their nooks in the pines, before we continued on, braking the silence with the roar of our engines.

As the sun dropped over the horizon, the task of staying on the track and not careering into the snowmobile in front of me got more difficult, but the views of the orange glowing sun setting over the landscape while casting shadows over the rises and falls in the snow, took my mind off my worries and my breath away.

What a spectacular way to finish the day and an experience I’m glad I got to participate in, even if parts of it scared me to death!
