Saving for Travel Series: Handmade Dishcloths. 13

Travelling costs, it doesn’t matter how you do it, whether it’s camping or staying in luxury hotels, you will need some money to travel!

Lots of people think they can’t save for travel, it’s out of their reach. But if I, as a single mum, can do it so can you!

Each month I will show you what small things I do to help us save money so that we have more for our travel fund.

Over the years I decided that I had had enough of buying dishcloths, not just because of the cost but also because of the throwaway nature of these items. Even if you purchase the washable ones, they can be expensive and don’t always last. So a couple of years ago I started to search online for some handmade ideas but all I could come up with was patterns generally based around knitting or crocheting… (which I can’t do!) until I found a blog post on Down to Earth which showed how to sew dishclothes. It was from then on that I have made my own… it is so easy!!

Here’s is my take on making your own dishcloths!

What you need:

A sewing machine (you can get reasonably cheap machines from spotlight, linecraft and even Big W!)

Scissors

Cotton

Flannelette ( this could be old pyjamas that the kids have grown out of or even old flannelette sheets  ( I used some scraps of flannelette this time from my fabric pile)

Towelling (old bath or beach towels are great for this! This time I used a clean old towel nappy) if you don’t have any old towels check out op shops for cheap, second hand ones.

Note: I only have ever use recycled or repurposed fabrics for this project -I never pay for the fabric from a fabric shop.

How to do it!

Cut out one square of each fabric about 25cm long.

Place the pieces with the “right” sides (ie the print) together and pin.

Sew around the edges of the fabrics leaving a gap of about 10cm to turn it through.

Turn the pieces through the hole so the correct side is on the outside and push out the corners.

Sew around the edge again making sure that the hole (where you turned it through) is secured.

And there it is… finished! An easy sewing project that will save you money and be kinder on the environment!

I find the cloths are very good for cleaning not just dishes but wiping benches and cleaning bathrooms and wash up very well in the washing machine while lasting for years!

Have you ever thought of (or have you made) your own dishcloths?

Safe travels
