Saving for Travel Series: Homemade laundry liquid! 7

Travelling costs, it doesn’t matter how you do it, whether it’s camping or staying in luxury hotels, you will need some money!

Lots of people think they can’t save for travel, it’s out of their reach. But if I, as a single mum, can do it so can you!

In this monthly series, I will give you tips on how to save in everyday life for your travelling goal!

This month I’m am sharing with you how I save money by making my own laundry liquid.

When I first become a single mum  of five kids I knew that I had to make cutbacks or look at alternative ways to live if I was to have enough cash just to pay for the rent, food and bills…. let alone travel. I began scouring the internet for frugal websites /blogs to gather information and discovered the wonderful Rhonda Hetzel’s Down to Earth blog. Rhonda shares with everyone the joys of simple living and tips/recipes on how to do so, and has written a couple of books – it is both on her blog and in her book that I first discovered a recipe for Laundry Liquid. Homemade Laundry liquid is easy to make, uses 4 ingredients, cleans your clothes well and is better for the environment than other products. But best of all Ronda has calculated the costs and has determined that by following the recipe you can make 10 litres for about $1.75! Alot cheaper than commercial liquids and the savings adds up!

Here is how it is made!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 litres of water

1 cup of grated laundry soap or soap flakes

1/2 cup of washing soda (found in laundry aisle of supermarket)

1/2 cup of Borax (also found in supermarket or Bunnings)

Method:

I always use no name laundry soap so the first step is to grate about half a bar till it makes up one cup. (my youngest loves helping out with this!) Add the soap to the water in a saucepan and mix till dissolved over medium heat.

When completely dissolved add the washing soda and Borax continuing to stir until it becomes thick. (Don’t add the Borax if you use your water from the washing machine to water your garden as it can affect your plants)

Next pour the mix into a 10 litre bucket and fill up with tap water. Stir continuously to mix all the ingredients together, as it cools it will get thicker, and if you take the time to stir now the smother it will be.

Fill containers with the liquid leaving space so there is room to shake before using it in the machine (it will separate in the bottle). I use recycled two litre milk containers and a funnel for this. When washing use between 1/4 and 1/2 cup in your machine, and for stains rub a bit onto the spot before adding to the wash.

I find that this liquid works well for majority of our washes. If something is quiet stained I will often hand wash the dirt off with the laundry soap / or soak before washing. Also be aware that this liquid doesn’t make bubbles and can be used in both top and front loaders.

As an added bonus…. I use this a little of this liquid mixed with Bicarb to make an excellent cleaning product that’s just like Gumption! (also suggested by Rhonda!)

I love this homemade product!!

I also love the money I save and how it helps with my savings for my Travel goals!!

Do you make your own laundry liquid?

Is there any other laundry liquid recipes or tips that you want to share?

Safe Travels!
