Somersby Falls 2

My eldest daughter, Amber, mentioned to me a couple of weeks ago about spending the day together. She knew that she was going to come off a full on couple of weeks at work and I think she was feeling the need to reconnect, with me and with nature.

She suggested that we head to Somersby Falls, on the New South Wales, Central Coast, so on Wednesday we let Ivy have the day off school so she could join in the adventure, packed up some lunch and drove down the M1 to Somersby.

I am so glad that we did.

Parking outside of the gates (to avoid paying for parking!) it was a quick walk in to the beginning of the track, which would take us along beside each of the waterfalls and give us varying access to the water. We chose to head to the last (bottom) one on the track, and stood down under it as the falling water sprayed lightly, hitting us as it formed a small and shallow pool at the bottom. Admiring the water as it cascaded down, we were startled by an eel, who was peering out from under a rock, keeping an eye on what we were up to, before it finally disappeared under the ledge.

Keen to explore more, we let Ivy take the lead and at times we struggled to keep up with her as she continued further down the creek bed, scrambling over rocks and ducking under fallen logs. Apparently, so we were told, there was another waterfall further down with a bigger, swimable rock pool, but after a while of rambling over the rocks, we decided that we were content to sit back and soak in the sounds of the bush, the warmth of the sun and the tricking of the waterfalls. We can always come back on another day to swim, one in which the water is a bit warmer.

We each had moments on our own, exploring the space around us, each connecting with nature in our own way, each getting some kind of solace out of the day. With upcoming trips to plan, the business of Christmas and the end of year coming to a conclusion, this was a day that was need by all of us, and I’m so very glad that Amber suggested it.

How do you unwind?

Do you use nature to help you?

Safe Travels
